About the CCRP
The academic CCRP program provides students with the essential qualifications and tools to become an effective university-credentialed Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner.
The CCRP program ensures the highest standards of teaching and support, as well as continuous learning to CCRP graduates around the world. The curriculum draws from ongoing research, evidence-based case studies and clinical experience and innovative technologies.
The hybrid learning (“blended-learning”) model allows the student to study at their own pace with maximum flexibility to manage work, learning and other demands.
The CCRP program trains to review, among others, canine anatomy, gait analysis, conformation, lameness evaluation and neurologic examination. Course graduates will have the expertise to determine the most appropriate therapeutic approach for various clinical rehab conditions, including the selection of therapeutic modalities and setting up comprehensive and evidence based treatment plans tailored to the individual patient.
The academic CCRP program was the world’s first university-based, RACE-approved credential program in canine physical medicine and rehabilitation. It is successfully implemented by the University of Tennessee (UT) and the Veterinary Academy of Higher Learning (VAHL). VAHL has successfully grown and established the international market for the University of Tennessee veterinary rehabilitation courses over the past years. In 2005, CCRP was introduced in Europe. On July 1, 2022 VAHL became the exclusive global marketing and education partner of UT. In this context, the partnership expanded to NOW include the United States and Canadian markets in addition to Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia/NZ, Middle and South America, making it a worldwide approach.

Program details
The academic CCRP program consists of 7 modules. Completion of the program depends on the student; students study at their own pace, which allows students to follow the program while meeting the demands of working. Typically, students finish within 1-3 years. The e-learning modules are open for three years and can be extended, if necessary.
Canine I: Online Lecture Series (12 hours)
Module I reviews the regulatory issues involved in this field of practice from the perspective of physical therapists and veterinarians. The response of tissues to disuse and remobilization will be covered and clinically applied to the science of veterinary rehabilitation. An overview of basic comparative anatomy will be reviewed, as well as commonly seen orthopedic and neurological conditions. Collaboration between the veterinary and physical therapy professions will be emphasized to enhance the learning experience. How to get started in the field and protocol development will be reviewed.
Canine II: Online Lecture Series (22.5 hours)
Part I
This module will provide the participant with the didactic and clinical applications of selected physical agent modalities used in canine physical rehabilitation. Superficial heating and cooling agents, therapeutic ultrasound, extracorporeal shock wave treatment, laser therapy and neuromuscular electrical stimulation will be covered in the lecture.
Part II
This module will provide the participant with the basic skills necessary to prescribe and provide therapeutic exercise programs for dogs. Benefits and risks associated with therapeutic exercise programs will be covered along with outcome assessment of exercise programs. Some of the topics covered will be range of motion, strengthening exercises, aquatic exercises and exercises for wellness/prevention.
Canine III&IV: Onsite Lab Days (4 days)
Exceptions: lab days conducted at universities
This module will provide the participant with laboratory experiences for selected physical agent modalities used in canine physical rehabilitation. Superficial heating and cooling agents, therapeutic ultrasound, extracorporeal shockwave treatment, laser therapy and electrical stimulation will be covered. A palpation lab on live dogs is included to review important anatomical structures for rehabilitation. This course also provides the participant with the basic skills necessary to prescribe and provide therapeutic exercise programs for dogs. Benefits and risks associated with therapeutic exercise programs for dogs will be covered. Topics covered include exercise physiology, range of motion and stretching, gait training, strengthening exercises, balance and proprioceptive exercises, aquatic exercises and exercises for wellness/prevention. Outcome measures (goniometry, circumferential measurements etc.) will also be practiced in this course. Orthopedic and neurological evaluation/assessment of the rehabilitation patient will also be reviewed and performed with supervision.
Canine V: Online Lecture Series: Basic Science of Osteoarthritis (22 hours)
This module addresses the basics of osteoarthritis. In order to appreciate the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis, students need to understand the importance of normal cartilage structure and function, as well as the concept of the joint as an organ. The emphasis is not solely on treating the articular cartilage but on treating the entire joint. A thorough comprehension of the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis will help to understand the efficacy of different treatment options, inclusive TCM.
Note: The module may be completed prior to Canine III&IV Onsite Lab Days.
Canine VI, 2 parts:
Part I
40 hours of training (externship)
Part II
- 5 own case studies
- The guidelines for this course are given to each individual and discussed during the lab days.
- Canine I thru IV must be completed prior to the starting this part. A case study format and sample case will be provided and MUST be followed.
Canine VII: Final Exam
- Part 1: 150 MC questions
duration: 3 hours 30 minuts - Parts 2 and 3: practical/oral part
duration: 30 minutes - All previous steps (Canine I-VI) need to be completed prior to applying for the exam
Prerequisites
Admitted professions are Veterinarians, Licensed Veterinary Technicians/Nurses, Physical Therapists, Physical Therapy Assistants, Occupational Therapists, respectively active students of these professions.
